How to Become a Taxi Driver With Silver Service

You join through a progression pathway rather than a direct application. Drivers typically begin with 13cabs, completing network induction and driving under the 13cabs brand. You build a rating history from real trips and gain the skills Silver Service is known for. Once you demonstrate consistent service quality, you can progress to Silver Service.

Exceptions do apply. If you have a clean driving record or previous rideshare experience, you may be eligible for immediate entry.

Taxi Drivers usually work as independent contractors, so you need an Australian Business Number before your first shift. You can apply for your ABN as a sole trader through the Australian Business Register at no cost, then register for GST at the same time. Unlike most small businesses, taxi Drivers must register for GST regardless of income.

What You Need to Get Your Taxi Driver Accreditation

Your state sets the requirements for taxi Drivers, not Silver Service. You apply to the transport authority where you plan to drive, meet their criteria, then bring your approval to us. Requirements differ between states and change over time, so confirm the current rules with your authority before you apply.

A taxi licence is a separate matter. It covers operating a taxi rather than driving one, so you don’t need one to drive with us.

Most states will look at:

  • Your driver licence: You need a full Australian driver licence, and each state sets its own minimum holding period.
  • Your health: You need to meet the medical standards for commercial Drivers, which can involve a medical assessment or a medical certificate.
  • Your record: Your driving history and a criminal history check both form part of the assessment.
  • Your identity and work rights: Government-issued identity documents such as an Australian passport are commonly used, along with proof you can work in Australia.
  • Your communication: Some states expect Drivers to communicate comfortably with passengers in English.

Where you apply depends on your state:

  • New South Wales: The Point to Point Transport Commissioner sets the eligibility criteria, and your network checks them before signing you on.
  • Victoria: Safe Transport Victoria issues commercial passenger vehicle Driver accreditation.
  • Queensland: The Department of Transport and Main Roads handles driver authorisation for Brisbane and Gold Coast work.
